The concept is simple… if you don’t advertise your product or service correctly, you won’t sell a dime. The primary objective of advertising is to get the word out about something exciting you have to offer, says George Felton in his book “Advertising: Concept and Copy”.

Maybe you think that you don’t need advertising because you are obtaining clients through recommendations. Yes, I think that word-of-mouth is powerful, but you can’t control it entirely. For example, what would happen if your selling point is that your product is unique and offers a variety of benefits to your client compared to your competition, but at the same time, is far more expensive? You could be in a serious problem if your clients only referenced your elevated prices without any context.

My point is that you need to be in control of what people think about your product or service by advertising your selling point and giving your client a good reason to buy from you. Think about it… the more you advertise, the clearer the word-of-mouth. And we all know that many people love their gossip. Just look at the rise of social media these last couple of years!

To be honest, not everything is about money. Advertising helps raise your potential client’s awareness to something unknown. It’s an educational process related to the benefits of your product or service, and it’s best we start getting used to it because content marketing is presenting –and will continue to present– opportunities for marketers in the future. If your potential client knows about your product or service, his or her decision will be an informed one and will measure up against your competitors. What’s the benefit? The potential client will likely select your product or service over your competitor because the reason for buying is clear.

Finally… an ongoing advertising campaign is essential in order to remind the actual client that you’re still around for him. That’s how real relationships last. Right? ;)
