The adventures of Endill Swift by Stuart McDonald

That was one of my favourite books from childhood, tells the story of young boy who’s sent to this mysterious school built over an island. I remembered it while reading Titus Groan, so I went to seek after the book to no avail.

Resorted to buy the English version, it’s still a very relaxing and funny novel even for an adult, I remember my father reading it and laughing about all the weird things happening to Endill.

It’s all about a labyrinthine school built on an island from which all the children try to escape through a variety of creative means (balloons, catapults..), a giant library whose roof is so high you cannot see the end, weird (a lot weird) professors and a few nice ones, a library monster who builds homes made of encyclopedias, a creepy father who lost himself in the same school and lost his perception of reality since then.

Reminds a bit Harry Potter and the fact that the author’s surname is clearly Scottish and the publisher is from Edinburgh (Canongate) makes me wonder a lot. Too pity there is no information available on the net, just some other people seeking info like me, the mystery deepens!
