Why is California Burning?

How years of mismanagement led to massive wildfires

California might be in trouble.

But why is California burning so rapidly? What has caused such a drastic increase in the spread of wildfires?

Some theorists are quick to point at rising temperatures and an extremely dry summer as the root cause of the fires. This does explain why fires can spread so easily, but the data does not fully match up. Temperatures have been higher, but the slight temperature increase seen over the last century does not account for such a drastic increase in fires. In other words, wildfire incidents have risen at a greater rate than the correlated increase in temperature.

As it turns out, gross mismanagement and negligence have led to the current situation that California faces. To understand the mismanagement that has occurred, however, it is first important to understand California’s relationship with fire.

If this is true, then the 3 million acres that have been burned in California this year are not significant. What is significant, though, is the fact that there are now people and houses in the path of the fires.
