Shadow of Drought

Water is one of the essential things that every single form of life on earth must have in order to live. Pakistan’s supply of water is quickly dwindling away, which is resulting in wide spread droughts and death across the country. The Pakistani establishment doesn’t realize that the country needs dams and not roads. According to various reports from scientists, Pakistan will become a barren land by 2025 if water is not stored.

Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman retired Lt Gen Muzamil Hussain during a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee revealed that Pakistan wastes water worth Rs.25 billion every year. Hussain, while briefing the committee, said that Pakistan receives 145 million acre feet of water every year. However, only 14 million acre feet of water is preserved!

Kalabagh dam is currently the most essential project that Pakistan needs to work on. This dam is a gold mine for Pakistan. It is to be an earth fill 265 feet high, with water reservoir capacity of 6.1 MAE over river Sindh, with two spillways for disposal of excess flood water. It will have installed hydel generation capacity of 3600 MGWT of electricity likely at Rs.1.5 per MGWT, equal to 20 million barrels of oil required for thermal generation of power causing a saving of at least Rs.100 per billion in foreign exchange every year, and facilitating reduction in power tariffs. 850,000 acres of fertile virgin land in Bannu and D.I.Khan, which is up to 150 feet higher than the water level of Indus, can be brought under cultivation; with construction of Kalabagh Dam. However it is not being built due to political factors.

Political families of D.I.Khan such as the Miankhels own vast lands in the area but they remain barren because of the fact that political rivals of these families are currently in the government and are preventing this dam from being built. This is being done because the political rivals of these families don’t want them to excel in politics. The basic point of politics is serving the people but in this case just for saving their seats, selfish politicians who are currently the policy makers for Pakistan are risking the lives of 200 million people. Are they not the modern Adolf Hitler?
