Let the Light In and Out

I cannot say it as well as Leonard Cohen sang it, but it was first and foremost poetry.

His song was entitled. “Anthem.”

That’s how the light gets in.

The question is, or maybe not is concerning what was Leonard Cohen trying to say to us.

And I ask, is that important?

Maybe more important is this question.

What is this poem saying to us today in the moment?

What is it drawing from us?

And how do these words make us feel?

What do they evoke from us?

By listening and reading to Cohen, I have discovered that he didn’t always have the answers to the questions that he asked.

I see here, the fallacy of perfectionism. I see the fallacious miscalculation of trying to wait for perfection until we speak.

Until we act.

I see the deep, profound nagging tendency that we have to hold back our word, to hold back our thoughts, to hold back our emotions, to linger in the shadows.

When there is something to be said, it must be said, when there is a bell to be rung.

We hold back. We look back on the good old days when our capacity was greater and our lives were stronger and our youth was less spent than it is today.

And to look at the cracks in the joints of our lives and in the foundations of our lives and say, there is no light. There is no hope. There is no capacity.

And Cohen says, if he says anything at all, ring them. He keeps coming back to the ringing.
