Is AWS vague about its products?

Be warned that this article is primarily about linguistics, philosophy and documentation. That documentation happens to be AWS’s .

Having recently passed two AWS certifications, I had to grapple with new services. The job of preparing for the SAA exam is basically the job of finding out what various services do. By ‘service’ here I just mean what is intuitively meant. A service is a product sold by AWS that fulfils some need. Examples of services are EC2, CloudFront, and Auto Scaling.

The question What does it do? often feels as if it remains valid even once you’ve reached the end of the docs. Some AWS YouTube videos are littered with unsatisfied viewers. Take the video for the service known as EC2. AWS seem to publish one What does it do? video — around 4 minutes in duration— for every service.

Of course, these actual comments might be deleted at some point. If they have been, it will just have to be taken on my word that they once existed. Also, there are positive comments which I’ll return to later. On the face of it, though, AWS aren’t communicating the nature of their services as well as they could do.

What follows from the presence of these comments? It’s not necessarily the fact that AWS cannot explain things. The comments might be evidence that AWS is engaging people in an uncomfortable task. Namely, coming to understand something which you don’t currently understand. And given that AWS is doing this — rather than not doing this — it’s achieving its goals. After all, I don’t understand how the offside rule works, or what a neutrino does. If I watched videos…
