The Passive State

If I ask you about the neutral state, would you say it is active, or, passive? The neutral state. This depends on whether you are active, or, passive, how you see, the neutral state, as active, or…

So what is Weybridge StrEATs about?

Hello! I wanted to tell you a little bit more about Weybridge StrEATs.

Along with many of us, I have become more environmentally aware over the last few years and wanted to learn how we, as a family can do more. I know I can’t do everything so I have chosen my three main goals and would love to take just a handful of people with me on my journey:

Eat seasonally — Inspired by many trips to Norfolk where local produce is in abundance and ‘farm to fork’ is a way of life, one of the changes I wanted to make is to understand what foods are in season, when, and what I can do with them. On my journey, I’ve discovered that it really is possible to eat seasonally and locally (or at least British) even though we are not in a rural area.

We have great pick your own farms, farm shops and farmers markets all within striking distance, and if that’s not your bag, we have all of the big supermarkets to choose from. You don’t have to go digging in a field to eat seasonal food, just a little bit of knowledge of seasonality can inform our choices much more easily, for example, if you know when broccoli is in season, you know when to look for British grown in the shops, so you choose the one from Lincs rather than the one shipped in from Kenya. It really is that simple!

I want Weybridge StrEATs to shout about great British produce, when it is coming into season (and going out), and make seasonal choices easy for everyone to make.

Why buy locally and seasonally?

Be Local — Increasing all local consumption, shopping with independent retailers, eating out, and using local services all help keep our community vibrant and is a massive win for the environment. Why? Because produce, products or people that have to travel great distances to reach our community emit more carbon emissions and goods require more packaging which often sadly is plastic which brings me to my third goal.

‘ Consuming local products helps the economy in the area: a pound spent on local products generates double for the local economy. Also, if local producers gain from their work, they will continue to generate wealth and jobs in the community.’ — Sustainability for all

Reduce Plastic Waste — This is a big journey! I’ve made loads of changes over the last few years, for instance, I wouldn't dream of going to the shops without a re-useable bag or taking my own water bottle out with me, but there is still more plastic in my life than I can shake a stick at! I started with trying to eliminate single-use plastic, associated with food (like that pack of three peppers that are cheaper than buying loose argh!) and am now moving on to find other swaps I can make to make our lives more plastic-free.

I’d love for you to join me on my journey as I find out more and celebrate all that is good locally in and around Weybridge and Surrey.
