RF Radiation Reduction In Smartphones

When we use a smartphone, it sends out invisible and powerful radio frequency energy. When we are holding this smartphone, the radio frequency energy is absorbed into our body. When the smartphone is held to the ear, some of the radio frequency signal is absorbed into the head as well.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission, also known as the FCC, has determined the safe limit for a mobile phone user is the SAR or Specific Absorption Rate of 1.6 watts per kilogram, as averaged over one gram of tissue. The FCC measurements and analysis of SAR have shown that this exposure limit is unlikely to be exceeded under normal conditions of usage. However, this normal condition is difficult to maintain during actual use since the smartphone is usually positioned in very specific orientation during testing, like being angled or pressed lightly against the cheek or face.

For example, when the phone is held closely to the head, kept in a pocket or tucked inside a bra, the radio frequency exposure may exceed the FCC limit. Since it may not always be possible for users to maintain this normal condition, what if we remove the component that generates the radio frequency signal and messes up the FCC’s safety limit? Well, this is exactly what we’ve done with this new invention. We first removed the radio frequency producing component and took it away from the smartphone.

The active component that sends out the radio frequency signal is now separated from the smartphone. The smartphone has now become a safer version of its previous self. The component that emits the radio frequency signal can now be positioned somewhere far away from the head. One strategic location is in the footwear — it is the furthest place from the head.

When operating indoors, this component can be placed near the window where we get great reception from the cell tower. When we do away with the cell tower, this component can be connected to the internet fibre connection. When inside a vehicle, this component can be placed on the roof of the vehicle where we get great reception from the cell tower.

With this new invention, the FCC specified SAR is reduced to below 0.16 watts per kilogram. A 10-fold reduction!

When compared with the conventional smartphone which transmits 200 milli-watts of RF power, the new invention transmits less than 200 micro-watts, or 1000-fold lower. The RF power from the smartphone is extremely low using this invention.
