Gate keeping and How it affects others

Gate keeping is when a group/person control/limit access to a certain subject, activity, genre, etc. Gate keeping is present everywhere to the most chill fandoms all the way to the most obnoxious ones. Gate keeping is mostly done when something/someone starts trending and the fans from the beginning start to prevent others from enjoying the thing. For example Kendrick Lamar got really famous for his song HUMBLE, due to this other people started to look in to his other songs and claiming they were fans. The long term fans (not all of them) got upset and started to gate keep his music saying stuff like, “If your favorite song by Kendrick is HUMBLE you’re a fake fan.”, “Yo, I can’t believe all these basic people claim to like Kendrick they weren’t even here for (Blank) album.” and, “I miss when Kendrick was underground now he’s mainstream.”. These statements pretty much made listening to Kendrick’s music not enjoyable causing some new comers to drift away from Kendrick’s music. What most fans don’t realize is that your favorite show, genre, artist, etc. probably already has over a thousand people listening/watching so it’s not really underground; and if it was underground it’ll be helpful to the creator to be mainstream so that the things you enjoy from them will continue to be made. So in conclusion, stop gate keeping, you’re ruining it for everyone.
