Innovative Thinking Class 20190320 by Mr Ko Ju Chun.

Today is the fourth class for innovative thinking, and our teacher started the class by letting us watch the TED talk by Ed Boyden. After rewatching the video, I felt that the technology would be a good remedy for diseases like epilepsy, schizophrenia and other brain diseases. As a student who studied biology in the past, I think this is a great leap in the field of neuroscience. I felt a bit upset also because when I was in secondary school, the biology textbook only taught us about how the brain works, how the neurotransmitter transmits signals and synthesize enzymes such as dopamine. The syllabus didn’t give us information about the latest information or technology that we need in the 21st century. It is only until last week I know that we can use viruses to carry genetic modification gene to our brain as the inhibitor for certain signals to cure brain diseases. This method would work vice versa such as stimulate our brains to synthesize dopamine to make us happy.

After that, Mr Ko also taught us what he learned at Singularity University. The most important thing he learned is that we have to think or work exponentially. He said that all of us are so used to linear thinking because it is passed down through our ancestors. He told us that when we take thirty steps linearly, we will achieve only thirty steps, but when we take thirty steps exponentially, we will achieve a billion meters away from the original point. This quote from Professor Ray Kurzweil motivates us to think outside the box and not following the usual procedure to do things. I agree with his saying, and if we have to stand out from other people, we have to think exponentially. We also have to work hard to double our productivity, in order to fulfill working or thinking exponentially.

Mr Ko also told us that it is important to think exponentially by showing us how technology improved in a short period of time. Cameras, personal computers and integrated circuits are those technologies which get cheaper, smaller and more effective within a short period of time. Furthermore, the artificial intelligence AlphaGo who beats mankind in a go game also proves that technology is improving at a rate that human can ever imagine. This is like a waking clock to tell me that we should be more hardworking, brave to try out new stuff so that we would not be outdated compared to society.

Lastly, Mr Ko ended the topic by showing us Stadia, the Google cloud gaming subscription project that would change the life of gamers. Google Stadia is said that it would support games in 4K resolution plus 60 fps. This would be very convenient for gamers because, with Google Chrome, we can access games with high resolution at any place. After so many heavy topics, finally, there is something lighter for us to soothe our mind. Although I don’t play a lot of games, I think with this platform being published, it may inspire me to play games. Overall, from this session, I gained knowledge for the technological improvement of mankind, and we should not take these technologies for granted.
