Picture of two people shaking hands - accountability partners

I first heard of accountability partners when I started my business. I think it is a great idea and works really well. It is a very effective way for you to stay on track with your online business and even personal goals.

Accountability partners are people that you meet with to establish goals that you want to be held accountable for and they do the same with you. You hold each other accountable to the goals you have set for yourselves.

That might look like meeting once a week or once a month to check in on the progress you’ve made. Or messaging each other when you’re feeling overwhelmed and unsure of the next step.

Accountability is the big piece here. Being held accountable for the goals you’ve set is an effective way of ensuring follow-through and implementation.

Here are the lessons I’ve learned from having accountability partners:

It is important that you find someone that will hold you accountable and vice versa. There are going to be times where you let things slide or your partner lets a due date go by and each of you needs to be held accountable for completing the things you said you would complete.

You will want to find someone who won’t shy away from being honest with you and vice versa. There may be times when you’re feeling overwhelmed and trying to do too much at one time. It is important during this time that your accountability partner is honest with you and tells you to take a step back and prioritize.

If you’re struggling to prioritize an accountability partner can be a great sounding board and someone to give you an outside perspective.

They can also be there to just listen if that is what you need at the moment. It is important to create open communication and let the person know if at that moment you are looking for advice or just someone to listen to.

It is important to create boundaries as well. If your accountability partner is needing you to just listen then respect that and…just listen. If you are feeling overwhelmed at the moment and aren’t in the headspace to support them it is important to communicate that clearly so they understand.

where can i find an accountability partner

We recommend finding someone or even people who understand what you are trying to accomplish. This could look like someone who is in your industry or in a complementary network, meaning they offer a product or service that is complementary to yours. This may even look like someone who was once in your shoes but is a step or two ahead of you.

There are paid accountability groups available but if that is not in your budget it is still possible to find someone or people who will do it for free.

We recommend looking for an accountability partner in Facebook groups, LinkedIn groups, or even local in-person circles you’re in.

Having someone to support you, hold you accountable, and be your sounding board can be the jump start you need to get to the next level in business. And even personal growth. I, for one, have grown a lot personally from the people I have been accountability partners with.
